Default global address list exchange 2016 not updating
So, you added Joe Smith to the company and you’ve right-click updated the “All Users” address list so he can be included in distribution lists and so that he receives emails on dynamic distribution lists. But wait, Joe is not appearing inside the GAL/OAB you just updated! If you’re using the web distribution of the offline address book, the Exchange Client Access Server waits for a ‘polling time’ to arrive before it updates…just like any standard DFS (distributed file system) in Active Directory.Then you right clicked the OAB and selected ‘Update’. The default time is 480 minutes and of course, we don’t want to wait that long.Firstly and fore mostly: If you do anything in Exchange: Apply the “cup of coffee rule”, never make a change then go and prove that change works straight away! However most of us work in the real world and you have a user who needs to use this mailbox yesterday! Remember, if you are looking at the Global Address List in Outlook then you are NOT looking at the Servers Global Address List*. Then check the mailbox Exists (See Check for existence of mailbox sections below).1. The Mailbox SHOULD be in the right hand window (Providing you are in the correct administrative group, on the correct server, and in the correct mailbox store! Remember with Exchange 2007 / 2010 you create the mailbox with the Exchange system Manager anyway! On the Exchange Server, Start Ensure “Hide From Exchange Address Lists” is NOT ticked.Before cloning the accounts he had removed the mailbox from the template account however it had left the Exchange attribute “Show In Address Book” populated. When in Adsiedit open up the Default Naming Context then open up your domain name and browse to the OU that the user is in that you need to modify. Right click the user account and select properties.Then under the attribute editor browse down to Show In Address Book as seen below. Then simply remove the entries ( all of them ) that you see by highlighting and selecting remove. The next time your GAL rebuilds these accounts will be removed. If you are impatient like me you can drop into power shell and run these commands to update it immediately.
I tracked this down to that the client had cloned some accounts from an account that used to have a mailbox attached to them.You can export only your personal address book, but it’s quite troublesome to copy all GAL recipients to it.The easiest way is to export the address book right in the EMC console.Please note that I’m using Exchange 2007 with a separate CAS, HT, and Mailbox Server.First, let’s go over what is happening and why it is and then we’ll go over how we can force the OAB (Offline Address Book) or GAL to update with these users.
